The Sixth Amendment Center’s services can be broken out into two broad categories. First, we make information readily available to anyone who finds it useful — and at no cost to them. This work is housed on our website, and as our content grows, we hope you will continue to look around and share our work with your colleagues and friends. Second, we tailor our expertise to the needs of specific jurisdictions through technical assistance projects.
Those states and counties, however, that are most in need of our services (those that struggle the most to meet national standards for right to counsel services) are most frequently the least capable of affording the cost. Local governments quite properly devote every available penny to the provision of direct services to the accused, such as the cost of attorneys and support staff, leaving no remaining resources to cover the cost of the general information and the discrete technical assistance we offer — assistance that they often admit they desperately are in need of. This creates a difficult paradox where we know how to help states and counties to build systems for providing effective Sixth Amendment representation, policymakers in those states and counties increasingly come to value and rely upon our expertise, and yet the resources to sustain our work must come from elsewhere.
That’s where you come in. We know how to fix our nation’s right to counsel problem, but we need your help.
